Health and Wellness Education and Guidance

HEALTH PROMOTION CLASSES

AAHP's chronic disease classes provide information and resources on how to prevent and manage diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's and dementia by focusing on proper nutrition, weight loss, and other critical health matters. Upon signing up, participants will receive a weekly link to join the class. Options are as follows:

  • Tuesdays - focus on health and fitness, 11am - 12pm
  • Wednesdays, 6pm to 7:15pm
  • Thursdays - focus on health and nutrition, 1pm - 2pm
  • Thursdays, 6pm to 7:15pm

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

AAHP's Weight Management Program provides individualized health coaching for County residents who are ready to take the necessary steps to lose five pounds or more. Participants will benefit from weekly 20-30 minute phone conversations to review the principles of weight management, set goals, and plan strategies to overcome barriers that hinder weight loss.

Housing and Financial Assistance

The Washington Area Fuel Fund, a partnership between the Washington Gas Company and The Salvation Army has funds to help eligible residents with their utility bills. Up to $1,000 credit is available. For more information, please call 301-515-5354 or email azegada@pepco.com.

You can also visit https://washingtonareafuelfund.org for more information on utility support programs in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

COVID Rent Relief Program - Renters are urged to apply now for the COVID-19 Rent Relief Program – Phase 2. Renters also can call 311 (240-777-0311) to apply for rent payment assistance. Approved households may receive up to $4,000 toward rent. The program continues to accept applicants and anticipates serving 5,000 households by Dec. 30. Assistance is based on availability of funds.  

The County’s Emergency Assistance Relief Payment (EARP) program has expanded to include support for families affected by lost income as a result of having someone in the household with COVID-19. Income guidelines of the EARP program will also increase to 150 percent of the federal poverty level (FPL) and benefit amounts have increased as well.

FEMA provides financial assistance for deaths related to COVID-19. An applicant can apply for multiple deceased individuals. Assistance is limited to $9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $35,000 per application. For more information, including eligibility requirements, please visit: COVID-19 Funeral Assistance | FEMA.gov.

The Office of Home Energy Programs (OHEP) provides bill assistance to low-income households in the State of Maryland to make their energy costs more affordable and to help with the prevention of loss and the restoration of home energy service. Learn more here.

The COVID-19 Rent Relief Program provides short-term rental assistance to eligible households who have experienced lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused them to fall behind on their rent.
