Did you know that December 25 is the deadliest day of the year for heart attacks, and that more people have heart attacks between Christmas and New Year’s than at any other time? Many people eat heavier foods, drink more alcohol, skip their medications, and feel more stressed during this time. The cold winter weather also makes the heart work harder. These factors combined can take a toll on your heart.
Protect your heart and enjoy the holidays safely with these five habits:
- Watch what you eat. Fill half your plate with vegetables at holiday meals. Keep portions small for heavy foods like mac and cheese, fried chicken, and desserts. Eating slowly and drinking water during meals can help prevent overeating.
- Limit alcohol. If you drink alcohol, drink plenty of water at the same time. Avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Too much alcohol can raise blood pressure and trigger irregular heart rhythms. If you do not usually drink, it’s best not to start now.
- Move as much as possible. You can make opportunities for walking by parking farther away when shopping. You can sneak in some activity by dancing at family gatherings. Taking the time for a short walk after meals will support your heart, aid digestion, and help reduce stress. If you are walking outside, wear warm layers and shoes with good grip on the bottom to prevent slipping or falling on ice or wet surfaces.
- Take your medications every day. Never skip your blood pressure or heart medications during the holidays. Set a phone alarm or pack your pills in a weekly organizer, especially before you travel. Keeping medicines handy helps prevent missed doses if your schedule gets busy.
- Know the warning signs of a heart attack and be prepared to act fast. Heart attack symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, arm or jaw pain, nausea, or sudden exhaustion. If you feel these symptoms, call 911 right away. Do not drive yourself and do not wait to see if symptoms fade.
Do your best to stay out of the hospital this holiday season. Your heart will thank you!
