MCDOT Offering Adult Bike and E-Scooter Classes This Fall

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is excited to announce adult bike classes in September, October, and November, offering residents the chance to improve their cycling skills. Taught by experienced instructors from the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), the classes cater to all skill levels with two types of sessions: Learn to Ride and Basic Skills. Additionally, MCDOT will offer free, walk-up e-scooter classes following select bike classes.

Biking not only promotes sustainable transportation but also plays a significant role in enhancing the health and well-being of Montgomery County residents. County Executive Marc Elrich said, “We are proud to offer low-cost adult bike classes to our residents, providing them with the skills and confidence needed to bike safely and effectively. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this valuable opportunity.”

Participants in the Learn to Ride class will learn basic biking skills, including starting, stopping, balancing, pedaling, and steering. The Basic Skills class is designed for those who can already ride but want to refine their skills. All classes are open to residents 18 and older, with a $10 registration fee for Montgomery County residents. Members of WABA or Capital Bikeshare for All can attend for free.

Bicycles and helmets are provided for Learn to Ride participants, and they are available for rental in the Basic Skills class if needed. Scooter classes are entirely free of charge, with no registration required.

Due to the popularity of these sessions, each class is limited to 25 participants, so early registration is recommended. Registration for October and November classes opens on Monday, Sept. 9, and Monday, Oct. 7, respectively.

To register, visit the WABA website at waba.org/classes.
