September is recognized as Healthy Aging Month, a time to celebrate the wisdom and strength of older adults while encouraging positive approaches to aging. For many Black seniors, independence is deeply connected to dignity and self-worth. As we honor the resilience of elders who have learned to “make a way out of no way,” it is important to recognize that holding too tightly to independence can sometimes create risks that can lead to loss of independence.
Research shows that Black seniors often delay seeking assistance with daily activities longer than other groups, waiting until a crisis forces the issue. Falls alone send three million older adults to emergency rooms each year, with Black seniors facing higher rates of serious complications.
The good news is that accepting support helps people maintain their independence longer. Getting help with grocery shopping, accepting rides to appointments, or making homes safer with supportive features can help older adults to remain safe and comfortable in their own homes.
